about
Fyah Roiall returns to follow up his debut full-length UNDERRATED (released earlier this year on Easy Star) with a single attacking the current trend in Jamaican dancehall of bragging about "chopping" on songs. He teams with Miami-based, Jamaican dancehall artist Lincoln 3dot and producer SOS Dynamikz to throw serious lyrical shade on the practice. For those who don't know, Chopping is how Jamaica refers to its participation in what is more commonly known as a ‘lotto scam’ -- a practice where unsuspecting Americans receive phone calls telling them they have won a large sum of money but need to send a small fee to release the winnings. Chopping is a growing cultural practice, associated with skyrocketing unemployment rates in Jamaica, especially amongst the youth. Roiall, 3dot & SOS all acknowledge chopping has its place in the culture, as they know hustling in any way to avoid poverty is generally acceptable. But bragging about the crime in your music? They’d like to disagree.
New from the excellent Jamaican label Equiknoxx is this hard-hitting slice-of-life LP from unkle G full of understated dancehall. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 7, 2023
